MARINE BOMBING SQUADRON FOUR-THIRTEEN

SQUADRON LOG BOOK

COMMENTS:
My uncle, James Helmke, was a pilot with Squadron 413. Yesterday would have been his 90th birthday. Our family recently came across this website and found a picture of our beloved uncle. This was truly a wonderful gift to each of us and especially my dad, his brother. So heart-warming to see pictures of these young men as they served our country...true American heroes.

I've been researching where my father, Robert P. Bradley,Staff Sergeant,USMC. I am thrilled to find find out he was part of the "413". I would love to learn more from any of his old mates....
He was very proud of my joining the US Navy (altho he insisted that the Navy was not as good as the Marines!). I married a Navy man (now retired after 30 years as a Seal) and we have a son who is a Navy Seal...So, the military tradition lives on with us! Wish I could come to the reunion....

Sgt. Lee J. Curl was my cousin. He was lost in WWII when his plane went down or was shot down in the Pacific. I have his Army record announcing his death (declared KIA one year afterwards). Does anybody know what happened to him or the history of when he was lost? Thanks. God blee you, Tom

Wiley Green was my uncle. Your grandmother, Ruth Habig Green is my mother's sister. Please know that Frank J Habig (your great uncle) was also in VMB 413 and so was George W. Jackson. George Jackson was married to Ruth Habig's sister Virginia, also nicknamed "Jean". There was a true family tie between Wiley F. Green, Frank J. Habig, and George W. Jackson.

My father, Frank Michelitch was a private first class/plane mechanic with the 413. He always talked about hitching a ride from Cherry Point to a railroad in Va. and then making his way back to NYC. He was always proud to be a USMarine. Please contact me with any knowledge/friendship you have of him. He passed away in 1994. Thankyou for all you have done for our country.

The best way to learn about your VMB 413 family member is to attend a VMB 413 Reunion. The next reunion will be held September 26-28, 2011 in Biloxi, MS. I am organizing this year's event, and would be happy to hear from anyone interested in attending. Just email me at rickbower@msn.com, and I will be happy to provide you with additional information. Many widows and children attend, so you would not be alone. Thre are three generations of my family attending. Come and see memorabilia and talk with the few remaining squadron members who shared experiences with your husband, father, or grandfather. You won't regret it.

My Dad Irving flew in this squadron. It is wonderful to see some of the pictures here and read of other relatives. We lost Dad a year ago and while he rarely spoke of his time in the service I know he was a proud Marine.
